An SEO site earns by ranking in Google for questions people already ask, then monetising that attention through display ads, affiliate links or its own products. Unlike social content, nobody has to follow you — the traffic arrives from search whether or not anyone knows your name.

The business changed fundamentally between 2022 and 2024. Google's Helpful Content updates, followed by the rollout of AI Overviews, removed a large share of traffic from exactly the kind of generic informational content that used to work. Sites that summarised what was already online lost most of their traffic, sometimes overnight. Sites built on first-hand experience largely survived.

What that means practically: the old playbook of publishing 200 keyword-targeted articles on a topic you don't know is dead. The current playbook is narrower — fewer articles, genuine expertise, original photos and data, and a topic where you can say something that isn't already on the first page.

Who this is actually for

Good fit if you have real, demonstrable experience in a specific area and can write consistently for a year with no feedback. Bad fit if you need income within six months, or if the plan depends on producing articles about things you haven't done — that's the exact profile Google has spent three years demoting.

What it really costs to start

Rough figures, current at the time of writing. Prices change and vary by country — treat these as a planning baseline rather than a quote.

What you can realistically earn

Display ad networks pay on RPM — revenue per 1,000 sessions. Google AdSense typically returns $2–8 RPM. The premium networks pay substantially more: Mediavine requires 50,000 monthly sessions and typically pays $15–40 RPM, Raptive requires 100,000. Getting to the Mediavine threshold is the single biggest revenue step change in this model.

That threshold maths matters. At 10,000 sessions a month on AdSense you might make $40. At 50,000 sessions on Mediavine you might make $1,000 — a 5x traffic increase producing a 25x revenue increase, because both the volume and the rate improved.

Timeline is the hard part. New domains routinely see near-zero search traffic for 4–8 months regardless of content quality. Most sites that succeed publish 30–50 articles before meaningful traffic arrives. Many sites never get there, and the honest failure rate is high.

Your first 30 days

A concrete week-by-week plan. It assumes a few hours a week, not a full-time commitment.

Week 1 Pick a topic you can defend

  • List things you have genuine hands-on experience with
  • For each, check whether products exist with real affiliate commissions
  • Search 5 questions in each topic and note whether small sites rank on page one
  • Choose the topic with the weakest page-one competition, not the highest volume

Week 2 Set up and find openings

  • Register the domain and get a basic site live — design does not matter yet
  • Verify Google Search Console and submit a sitemap
  • Build a list of 30 long-tail questions where small sites currently rank
  • Group them into 3 topic clusters so your first articles interlink

Week 3 Publish with first-hand detail

  • Write 3 articles that answer the question fully and stop
  • Include at least one thing nobody else has — your own photo, measurement or result
  • Add internal links between the three
  • Write an About page that makes your actual experience explicit

Week 4 Make it a routine

  • Publish 3 more articles in the same cluster
  • Add an email capture with a genuine reason to subscribe
  • Check Search Console for impressions — not clicks, impressions are the first signal
  • Schedule the next 12 articles so the decision is already made

Honest pros and cons

What genuinely works

  • Traffic is not tied to an audience or algorithm you have to feed daily — a ranking article works while you sleep
  • Genuinely sellable: content sites trade at roughly 30–45x monthly profit on Empire Flippers and similar marketplaces
  • Stacks multiple revenue streams on the same traffic — ads, affiliate, email list, own product
  • Startup cost is a domain, so the financial downside is almost zero

What people don't tell you

  • You're building on rented land; a core update can halve your traffic in a day with no warning and no appeal
  • AI Overviews now answer many informational queries directly, removing the click entirely
  • 6–12 months of unpaid work is the normal case, and a meaningful share of sites never earn anything
  • AdSense RPM at low traffic is genuinely poor — the model barely works below the Mediavine threshold

Mistakes that kill most attempts

Writing what's already on page one

If your article is a rephrased version of the current top result, there is no reason for Google to rank it above the original. The only durable advantage is information nobody else has — your own testing, your own photos, your own numbers.

Targeting keywords owned by major publishers

Checking search volume without checking who currently ranks is the most common wasted effort in SEO. If page one is Healthline, Forbes and NerdWallet, a new site will not break in. Find queries where small sites already rank.

Publishing 200 thin articles instead of 40 good ones

The volume play stopped working with the 2022 Helpful Content update and has only got worse. Sites hit hardest were those with large volumes of shallow content.

Ignoring email from day one

Search traffic can vanish in a core update. An email list is the only audience you actually own. Every article should have a reason to subscribe.

Quitting at month 4

Month 4 is statistically the worst possible time to quit — it's typically just before the trust period ends. The traffic curve for successful sites is flat, flat, flat, then a step change.

Frequently asked questions

Is blogging still worth it in 2026?

It's significantly harder than it was. AI Overviews answer many informational queries without a click, and Helpful Content updates removed a lot of generic content from rankings. What still works is first-hand expertise in a narrow niche — content that requires having actually done the thing, which is expensive to fake at scale.

How long until a blog makes money?

Typically 6–12 months to meaningful traffic and 12–18 months to meaningful income. New domains go through an extended trust-building period where good content simply doesn't rank yet. Most successful sites have 30–50 articles published before traffic arrives.

How much traffic do I need to earn properly?

The step change is Mediavine's threshold of 50,000 monthly sessions, where RPM jumps from AdSense's $2–8 to roughly $15–40. Below about 10,000 sessions, display advertising earns very little and affiliate income is usually the better focus.

Do I need WordPress?

No. Static site generators on Cloudflare Pages or Netlify are free, faster and more secure. WordPress is still the default because the plugin ecosystem and ad-network integrations are mature, and most ad networks assume it.

Will AI-written content rank?

Google's stated position is that it rewards helpful content regardless of how it's produced, but in practice large volumes of unedited AI content share every characteristic the Helpful Content system targets — no first-hand experience, nothing original, nothing that isn't already online.
